    Random rants and raves
Who the hell writes this "Off The Record" column in The Freeman? OK, I'll be first to admit I couldn't come up with a good "Top Ten Albums of the Decade", but only because I've heard too much and yet heard too little. To elaborate, I've heard too many good albums to pick any 10 as the "best" and at the same time, there's too many I haven't heard yet and it would be a shame to pick out the 10 "best" without hearing them first. To summarize, it's just not a good idea to come up with any such list.

But if you're gonna do it anyway, you've got to at least do a little research. And have a little taste, perhaps. I mean, seriously now, 50 Cent? It would have been dumb to call 50 Cent's debut one of the best albums in the year it came out, more so the 10 best in the decade! For one thing, I'm dead sure the Arctic Monkeys' debut was 100x better, and that's not just bias on my part as a hardcore Arctic Monkeys fan. And then this writer throws in some Amy Winehouse and The White Stripes in some feigned attempt at appeasing the more artsy crowd. Totally lame.

I bought a guitar slide last week and have so far been having a blast learning to use it. I bought it because Eric Clapton and a bunch of my other guitar heroes use it regularly, but the only thing I really knew how to play with it is the guitar solo to the Eagles' "Love Will Keep Us Alive". Sure, I thought I could improvise some blues scales and the like; after all, how could it be much different from playing with your fingers? It wasn't as easy as I thought but I eventually learned to use it half-competently.

Then today, I found out you don't even have to press it against the wood to make a clear note, you just have to kinda float it over the frets. How cool is that?!

I'm wondering how far delays could go for Amazon shipments. The note on my "Orders" page says estimated delivery is December 3, which is a couple of weeks ago. So now I have to be a little worried about my package not ever getting here. Maybe it fell off the cargo ship, or someone at the post office thought it might be fun to take it home and see what's inside. I've even worried as far as to suspect the guard at the office of stashing it away for himself. God, I'm paranoid. Hope it gets here soon.

Just 'coz I'm so hyped about it, I'll go ahead and brag that inside the package is "Stranded: Rock and Roll on a Deserted Island" by Greil Marcus, a collection of essays from Bangs and other rock scribes detailing what album they'd want to have with them on a deserted island, and The Clash's "London Calling", which any music fan should know was a landmark album in punk history. Hope it gets here soon!
